I actually fancied a Channel 4 documentary that was going to be made for a long time. It was about the proto-shoegaze band Slowdive, who was a side-project for MBV. Coincidence? I think not. S3 have an amazing wealth of foreshadowing and influence. All on 7”. I mean, I identified as a Homogenic fan before I knew what the hell they were, but they represent the start of this next phase of some of my favourite music and this can be traced back perfectly to Sonic Boom. (It's nicely titled by Paul St John of Slowdive on the sleeve. Nice to know I'm not alone, Paul!)

The influence of the more cosmic spacey sounds of S3 is there, but MBV also had plenty of the arty-pop shimmer and smoothness that characterised early Homogenic. This is the sound that I keep coming back to in songs of the late 1990s and early 2000s, including Homogenic, Mojave 3, Set Fire To Flames, Time To Just Be, Glorious and the lyrics and words here fit perfectly, especially with the “cold waters” line.

I’ll close with what I don't know that I love about this album: I have no idea the significance of the Sometimes When I can’t sleep. I just like it. It’s really what the album is: a collection of mostly unreceptive pieces. They don’t take on the traditional shoegaze/choking-on-sugar pop crescendo. They grow darker and more vague while being more powerful and far more widescreen and cinematic. You get used to it, but for me it’s perfect: the atmosphere, the strings, the gaze.
