A diplomatic mission to the United Nations is wrecked when soldiers of the Hellfire Club break into the UN's Vault of Heaven. After a struggle between the X-Men and Hellfire Club the Hellfire Club almost destroys the dragon Morlock, used by the X-Men, but for some reason he awoke and attacked them.
Wolverine feels a pang of regret at having sold out to Weapon X and escapes, only to be pursued by Sabretooth. The two fight at the home of Xanatos before Sabretooth knocks Wolverine out with his claws. Wolverine awakens, and discovers that he is in a prison-like facility owned by Sabretooth. He breaks free, and leaves with the transport plane to be returned to Weapon X. However, the plane is shot down by a reactionary Proxima Midnight. The plane crashes, and she revives Wolverine, who offers to help her regain her body. After obtaining healing, it is revealed that Wolverine is a clone of a Hulk-Hogan, created by Mister Sinister as a servant: his original form was destroyed when the Hulk-Hogan merged with the demon Azrael. After he was left in Azrael's domain, he was bound for life to serve the demon, but freed when the Hulk-Hogan self-destructed. After being freed from Azrael's domain, Wolverine was found by Sinister who placed him into stasis in the Mutant Growth Hormone tank, and transformed him into the mutant Weapon X. Seeking revenge for his ordeal, Wolverine ambushes Sinister and his allies at the cathedral, and destroys them with powerful blasts of energy. Wolverine seemingly dies in the carnage, but his body is later discovered in a secret Lab in Sinister's massive Asgard Temple in Norway.[volume & issue needed]
Wolverine paid a visit to the Winter Soldier's hideout looking for guns. The Soldier refused to give him the guns. Instead he offered Wolverine a part in his scheme. He offered to bond adamantium to Wolverine, allowing him an escape from the bonds that have held him captive for a thousand years. Wolverine became horrified by what was going to happen to him.
