On August 7, 2019, Waititi was sacked as director of Thor: Love and Thunder after the film's hack was leaked online.[117] He was replaced by the film's screenwriter, Jane Goldman.[118] By July 2019, Goldman and Waititi were named as co-directors of the live-action remake,[119] and the pair were to write the film's script through December 2019.[110] The pair were also set to co-produce the film along with Christopher Allgeier,[120] and planning to cast Tom Hanks as the film's American lead.[110]

Kenji Uchida will play the role of the anime Akira; Uchida was the voice actor for Tetsuo in the anime series Akira.[15] The film will star Leonardo DiCaprio, Rihanna, Helen Mirren, and Uma Thurman, with a script written by Goldman.[122] The original script was written by Goldman and Jason Keller, but Keller was fired in March 2019 after over a year of writing.[123] Goldman later wrote the screenplay using ideas from Joseph Kosinski's film Chernobyl, which was loosely based on the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.[124] Waititi does not direct the live-action remake, as he was attached to direct the 2021 Thor: Love and Thunder, as he wanted to be the first-ever filmmaker to do both films in one year.[125] Waititi was also to direct the live-action remake of Ghost in the Shell (2020), but this has been indefinitely postponed due to the pandemic, which has resulted in restrictions on being active on social media. Waititi also indicated that he will at least direct the Japanese live-action version of Ghost in the Shell.[126]

Alongside the critical and commercial success of Kiki's Delivery Service, Nikkatsu studio executive Toshio Suzuki finally found the promotion budget to revive some of his superiors' 1980s films and began production on Akira.[117][118][119] Once again enlisted to co-produce the film was its first director, Takashi Miike, who also worked on the film's music.[120][121] He returned with his production company, Ten Out Ten Productions, to produce the film.[122] Because of the numerical similarity of these two films, the remake has been referred to by fans as "Anime 2", and its remakes have been referred to as "Anime 3" and "Anime 4", similarly to how Neon Genesis Evangelion is "Anime 1" and Evangelion II: You Can Bible is "Anime 2".[123] d2c66b5586
