Hint: Advanced GRUB finds out what is happening because GRUB works on the OS-level and does not need any special hardware. The boot process starts with a call to the BIOS. When the BIOS detects the hard disk, the hard disk is checked forstability, and the boot-up information is stored in the hard disk's masterboot record (MBR). For example, if a drive is not detectedbecause there is no hard disk, or if it is detected but not connected, the BIOS will create a new hard disk drive that can be used to store the boot information. Next, the BIOS instructs the hard diskabout how to format the disk (formatting involves clearing up the headstructure and setting the MBR tag). The BIOS also sets up the hard disk's read/write head.
The status of drives can be found at a boot prompt. GRUB does not require a readable MBR. However, all versions of GRUB allow the GRUB screen to be viewable by the BIOS. If the BIOS sees the GRUB screen, it will not allow the BIOS to format the harddisk. If the BIOS is allowed to format the disk, GRUB will prevent the BIOS fromstarting. Conversely, if the BIOS is not allowed to format the disk, the BIOS will detect that there is a hard disk. d2c66b5586
